As a child, did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up? In the Dutch TV programme Later als ik groot ben ('When I grow up'), Jochem van Gelder looks at children who know exactly what they want to do in adult life. On Saturday 9 December, RTL4 broadcast the first in a series of eight programmes. SIDN is sponsoring When I grow up, which will underline the importance of digital skills for children.
A butcher's domain
Kees Bond from Volendam was the first youngster featured. When Kees grows up, he wants to be a butcher. And, of course, a modern butcher needs a webshop. Happily for Kees, the domain name 'devolendammerslager.nl' ('the Volendam butcher') was still available.
ICT and digital skills matter in all lines of work
Each programme in the series profiles a young person nearing the end of primary school, and looks at their dream job. They include Luna who wants to be a chauffeur, Robbie who dreams of being a painter and Jamie who sees himself caring for older people. The programme makers point out the importance of information technology in each of the professions. Because, no matter what line of work you choose, ICT knowledge and digital skills are going to help you do your job.
