SIDN Inspire 2024: working together to achieve more

Watch our short video compilation

On Thursday 16 May, the fourth edition of SIDN Inspire was held at LIEMÈS in Utrecht: a new venue where connection and togetherness found culinary expression. Because we can achieve more together than alone, the theme of the event was 'Forward together'.

Keynote presentation Gina Doekhie – cybercrime specialist

The programme featured a succession of interesting speakers, including cybercrime specialist and digital detective Gina Doekhie. In her keynote presentation, Gina spoke about the importance of collaboration amongst the police, private enterprises and victims. She illustrated how cybercriminals operate using practical examples, described the latest developments in the world of cybercrime, and considered the use of AI and the threat it poses.

In-depth sub-sessions

Following Gina's keynote presentation, guests were able to choose from a number of sub-sessions. This year's options included a sub-session on the theme of domain names, arranged in collaboration with the RA. Berend van Dalfzen talked about the current situation within the domain name industry, sharing the latest data, identifying trends and highlighting notable developments. Berend also took a closer look at the new ICANN contract for gTLDs, and considered its implications for the market. His co-presenter Siemen Roorda brought the sub-session to a close by looking at the upcoming gTLD application window scheduled to open in 2026.

Lawyer Thomas Rickert, who is Managing Partner at Rickert.law, led another sub-session this year, updating guests regarding NIS2 and its impact on the EU's domain name industry.

SIDN Labs' Research Engineer Elmer Lastdrager made a presentation on post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Topics covered included some of the challenges to be overcome and the progress of SIDN Labs' initiative to set up a testbed for PQC in the DNS.

Hester Benedictus, policymaker and inventor of the Lees Simpel app made an interactive presentation explaining how the app was designed and how it works. Hester also considered how AI can help organisations to write better letters.

Technophilosophy with Rens van der Vorst

Finally, technophilosopher Rens van der Vorst wound up proceedings with a humorous presentation exploring the question "How do we stay human in the era of digital technology?" His message was that everyone should be more of a digital gremlin. ;-)

The day was brought to an enjoyable close with refreshments and a delicious walking dinner that confirmed LIEMÈS's reputation as Utrecht's food district.
