On Thursday 25 May, the third edition of SIDN Inspire was held at Media Plaza in Utrecht. After running a hybrid event last year, we were able to revert to an entirely physical format this time around. Its theme was "The internet is magic!"

On Thursday 25 May, the third edition of SIDN Inspire was held at Media Plaza in Utrecht. After running a hybrid event last year, we were able to revert to an entirely physical format this time around. Its theme was "The internet is magic!"

Interesting speakers and in-depth sub-sessions

The programme featured a succession of interesting speakers, including the technology expert and trendwatcher Jarno Duursma. In his keynote presentation, Jarno talked about the synthetic revolution: the creative human-machine. Since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, it's been clear that artificially intelligent software is going to play a big role in our working and private lives. ChatGPT is already capable of producing summaries and answering questions in human language. The latest version, GPT-4, can even recognise and describe images. At the same time, Jarno believes we need to be aware of the risks: there are always people who'll misuse new technologies, and there's also a danger of us allowing our own skills to deteriorate. If we want new technologies to make a positive contribution, Jarno argued, we have to constantly reflect on ourselves and our actions.

Sub-sessions

After the first keynote presentation, participants were offered a choice of 5 sub-sessions. The ones devoted to Mastodon, Your Digital Data Safe and NIS2 were all well attended. At the sub-session on NIS2, SIDN's Legal and Policy Manager Maarten Simon, Justice and Security Policy Officer Sophie Keizer and Economy and Climate Policy Officer Alisa Heaver took the audience through the new directive and outlined its likely impact for registries, registrars and resellers.

The main proceedings closed with a keynote presentation by Annique Mossou, Trainer and Researcher at Bellingcat, who focuses on misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy theories and the war in Ukraine. Annique presented a number of case studies illustrating how the internet can also be a magical place where people work for the greater good, often anonymously. Using a series of striking photographs, she showed how a small detail can often reveal a very different side of a subject. Such details can be picked up by scanning the internet for evidence and comparing images. And a lot of the work is done with the help of private citizens, many of them anonymous.

Magical finale

A performance by illusionist Jochem Nooyen rounded off the event. His Privacy & Infosecurity Show involved a humorous look at the latest developments in privacy and information security. As a skilled mind-illusionist, Jochem showed just how much he knew about his audience members and gave a spectacular demonstration of what it's really like to have your privacy breached.

The day was brought to an enjoyable close with refreshments, and the opportunity to mingle and chat.
