More than 300 projects supported to help make the internet stronger
More than 300 projects supported to help make the internet stronger
7.5 years ago, SIDN Fund made its first call for innovative internet project proposals. Since then, the Fund has supported more than 300 projects, which have had an impressive impact. To mark the occasion, the Fund is holding a festive stakeholder event today at Villa Jongerius in Utrecht. The event programme features a string of inspiring speakers and presentations by supported projects.
SIDN Fund is an independent foundation set up in 2014 by SIDN, the organisation that runs the .nl internet domain. The fund's purpose is to help enhance the internet's value to society by providing early development funding to socially impactful internet initiatives. And the strategy is working well. Of course, SIDN Fund's impact depends on the success of the projects it supports. Some of the most successful projects are therefore being showcased at the anniversary event. They include Publicroam, AbuseIO/scartIO, HackShield Future Cyber Heroes, FutureNL, Bellingcat, DuckDuckGoose and the Online Hate First Aid Kit.
SIDN Fund has numerous plans to boost its impact even further in the period ahead. Central to those plans is the concept of a Responsible Internet, where public values are protected and promoted. When the internet came into being more than fifty years ago, no one could envisage what it would ultimately become: a commercial space, over which governments and citizens have little control. If we want our digital society to remain democratic, fair and accessible, some elements of the internet's architecture and design need rethinking to safeguard public values more effectively. Against that background, José van Dijck, Professor of Media and Digital Society at Utrecht University and winner of the 2021 Spinoza Prize, will present her vision of a Responsible Internet in the keynote speech at SIDN Fund's anniversary event.
Since the middle of 2019, SIDN Fund has focused its attention on urgent issues by adopting a themed call strategy, scouting for impactful projects and working more closely with other funding providers and stakeholders. The themes so far addressed are data autonomy, public values, inclusion and access, and fighting disinformation. SIDN Fund's new website features corresponding themed pages with full details of the projects supported by the Fund and the tools developed, as well as associated publications and news. The new site is intended to further increase the Fund's impact through knowledge-sharing. Visit www.sidnfonds.nl for the full picture.
