SIDN and .nl registrars support Cybersecurity Month in October

Working together to make the internet safer in the Netherlands
From 3 to 31 October, activities will be taking place throughout the Netherlands as part of European Cybersecurity Month, overseen by the Alert Online partner network. As in previous years, we'll be supporting Cybersecurity Month by organising and sponsoring activities, making content available, and sharing other campaign partners' content. This year, we'll also be working with nl. registrars to raise registrants' awareness of the scope for making websites and e-mail more secure. That'll involve a new campaign, where examples from everyday life are used to encourage smaller businesses to talk to their service providers about website and mail security.
The aim of the annual Cybersecurity Month is to promote the cyber-resilience of businesses, public service providers and the wider community. The Dutch campaign is organised by the Alert Online platform: a network set up by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, whose members include SIDN, the Dutch Banking Association, Thuiswinkel.org, Microsoft and Google. In October, all the partners will be organising events, training courses and exercises to get their personnel, customers and contacts thinking about cybersecurity.
Central to SIDN's communications will be the role that registrars and hosting service providers can play in making websites and mail traffic more secure. The scope for improvement is greatest in the small-and-medium-sized business sector, because SMEs understandably find it harder to give security the attention it deserves. The campaign will therefore aim to nudge SMEs into talking to their hosting service providers or registrars about risks and solutions, including:
Open security standards for websites (e.g. DNSSEC) and e-mail (e.g. DMARC)
TLS certificates
Private clouds
Multi-factor authentication and secure login solutions
Server and application vulnerability detection
The joint campaign will feature banners and social posts that use examples from everyday life to get people thinking about security. Audience members will be encouraged to contact their hosting service providers or registrars for help making their websites and e-mail more secure. Here are a few specimen posts:
