From 4pm to 6pm on Thursday 31 March 2022, Waag will be welcoming virtual and in-person guests to the fourth annual State of the Internet event. During the 2022 event, Waag, SIDN, SIDN Fund, De Groene Amsterdammer, CTO Amsterdam and Amsterdam Public Library (OBA) will be gauging the current status of the internet. This year's speaker will be Nani Jansen Reventlow, a human rights lawyer specialising in strategic action at the interface between human rights, social justice and technology.
In its early days, the internet was characterised by the grand ideal of a new, open, free world where everyone was equal. However, much has changed in the intervening years. Big Tech is the focus of growing criticism. Having long operated under murky terms and conditions, and using opaque algorithms, social media and online services have been embroiled in one scandal after another. Facebook and Instagram's parent company Meta, Google and others have come under fire for failing to clarify how they gather user data, and for driving polarisation. A wide range of problems exist, with implications for major issues such as privacy, autonomy, propaganda and platformisation. The more humane and fair 'community' we envisaged in the early 1990s now seems like an impossible dream. Instead, we find ourselves grappling with discriminatory algorithms, data breaches, conspiracy theories and threats. The coalition agreement underpinning the new Dutch government stresses the importance of a public media domain that is a recognisable, independent and trustworthy source of information. Waag's activities include the PublicSpaces research project, which is concerned with a secure digital public space and how it can be realised.
The question remains: how do we create an open, fair and inclusive internet? And what needs to be done to bring about a transition from the established, opaque social media to something better? It's time for a reboot. The State of the Internet 2022 will therefore launch Operatie Opnieuw Opstarten ('Operation Restart').
The State of the Internet 2022 is organised by Waag, De Groene Amsterdammer, SIDN, SIDN Fund, CTO Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Public Library. It takes place from 4pm to 6pm (Dutch time) on Thursday 31 March, in the Theatre Hall of the Amsterdam Public Library (OBA Oosterdok). In-person attendance is free and virtual attendance will also be possible. For more information and to register for this Dutch-language event, see the State of the Internet 2022 event page.
