Register for the State of the Internet 2020

From 3pm to 5pm on 27 February 2020, Waag is hosting the second annual State of the Internet event at the OBA Theatre in Amsterdam. Jaap-Henk Hoepman, associate professor at Radboud University Nijmegen and privacy-by-design expert, will link up with Dutch Green-Left parliamentarian Kathalijne Buitenweg to consider the issue of digital identities: Who defines, manages and protects my online identity? SIDN is co-organising the event.

Who defines, manages and protects my online identity?

This year looks like being a crucial one for digital identities. Our ability to define and redefine our identities has major implications for our democratic and sovereign future. Will we have to use our Facebook or Google accounts to log in everywhere, or will we be able to decide for ourselves what data we share? In other words, how can we secure and retain control over the identities we use online?

Challenges to secure and democratic digital identities

Keynote speaker at this year's State of the Internet event will be Jaap-Henk Hoepman, an associate professor at Radboud University Nijmegen and expert in privacy by design, who also works in IT law at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Law. Hoepman's multidisciplinary background means he is uniquely placed to assess the current status of the internet and analyse the challenges associated with designing and managing secure and democratic digital identities.

Political implications

Green-Left parliamentarian Kathalijne Buitenweg will respond to Hoepman's address and kick off a panel debate, in which the points raised and their political implications will be explored further. The other panel members will be announced shortly.
