Register for the SIDN TechTalk on 15th of April

2 fascinating speakers, a free dinner and a drink at the end.

TechTalk is back with a new edition on Wednesday 15th of April 2025! It's the familiar format: 2 fascinating speakers talking, plus an enjoyable meal. Come to the SIDN TechTalk on Wednesday 15 April and be inspired! Places are limited, so we recommend registering soon.

SIDN operates at the heart of the Dutch internet. Often in partnership with universities and other higher education centres. And often participating in national and international working groups concerned with abuse, security and data. We also maintain close ties with a variety of technical and other bodies in the Netherlands. As a result, we have expertise in many key fields, which we love to share with the internet community.

Who's TechTalk for?

Technical professionals and students from the Arnhem region who are passionate about their field, open to new developments and keen to share their knowledge.

Programme

18:00 – 19:00: Reception Don't go eating before you arrive! The programme includes an enjoyable, free evening meal.

19:00 – 19:45: Talk 1 Chat Control: the European regulation that threatens privacy and digital resilience threatened - Rejo Zenger (Policy advisor at Bits of Freedom)

The governments of European Union member states, together in ‘the Council’, have been negotiating a disastrous bill for almost three years. The European Commission wants governments to be able to force platforms to watch all the messages of all their users, looking for criminal material. This means nothing but large-scale and untargeted surveillance, rendering encryption useless and undermining the confidentiality of communications. It says it is meant to protect children and young people, but the proposed measures harm everyone, including those children and young people.

The cabinet decided last year not to support the proposal. Partly because, according to the AIVD, it poses too great a risk to our digital security. As a result, there was no agreement in the Council, allowing the proposal to be stopped at the time. So no client-side scanning or other encryption-circumvention measures for a while yet. But for how long?

About Rejo

Rejo Zenger is policy advisor at Bits of Freedom, the foundation that stands up for privacy and communication freedom on the internet. He is an expert on encryption and platform regulation.

19:45 - 20:30: Talk 2 DELEG: DNS on the rocks. Delegate like a pro! Safely and with confidence - Willem Toorop (developer and researcher at NLnet Labs)

The DNS protocol, in its current state, provides only basic facilities to communicate information from a parent zone (such as .nl) to a resolving nameserver (such as 8.8.8.8) about the nameservers of a child zone (such as sidn.nl). Only the NS, DS and glue mechanisms are available. Any other properties of that child zone nameserver have to be figured out by the resolver itself through other mechanisms.

Child zone operators also face a challenge: if their nameservers change, the changes must be communicated to the parent outside the DNS protocol.A new record type DELEG is in the works to solve this.

About Willem

Willem Toorop is a developer and researcher at NLnet Labs. Willem has a special interest in delivering first-class security and privacy (with DNSSEC and encrypted DNS) to end-users at the edges of the Internet. Willem enjoys working with authors of other Open Source DNS software and DNS operators on Open Standards and at hackathons to achieve interoperability of different DNS software. He also enjoys taking measurements of the state of the internet and DNS, to give feedback to operators and to get a better idea of where things can be improved protocol-wise and software-wise. He is passionate about his work and cannot resist talking, explaining and presenting about it.
