"Make yourself visible online with a visitor-friendly website"
With more than 6.2 million registered domain names, .nl is one of the biggest country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) on the internet. For anyone planning to run a business in the Netherlands, .nl is by far the most popular option. And, behind every business registration, there's a unique story. A story that deserves to be told. Like the story of Marieke Doff and her business Power Moms. Started in early 2022, the business offers fitness courses to help women stay keep in shape while pregnant and after giving birth. Marieke talks about her mission, the development of her website, and her plans for the future.
"Until 2021, I worked as a physiotherapist," says Marieke. "Part of my work was running ZwangerFit and MamaFit fitness training courses for women who were expecting or had recently had babies. Those are courses provided by a national organisation called YVLO. I found that, whereas being a physiotherapist wasn't quite the career I wanted, I felt energised by helping women stay healthy with the YVLO's preventive courses. I believe it's very important to look after your health during and following pregnancy, and that carefully building up fitness after having a baby helps you avoid long-term problems. So I came up with the idea of starting Power Moms in April 2022. My aim is to help women keep fit safely, responsibly and enjoyably when they're pregnant or have a new baby."
"I run ZwangerFit, MamaFit and BevalFit courses at the Iedema sports centre in my local town. A course involves 10 or more group sessions for 8 to 10 women. Doing a ZwangerFit or MamaFit course enables a woman to stay active in a responsible way. If you're fit and healthy, you're better prepared for childbirth, and you get back on your feet more quickly afterwards. BevalFit is a coaching programme linked to ZwangerFit, consisting of two information sessions. Before each ZwangerFit and MamaFit course, I organise an intake session for the women, so that I know what fitness level they are at. I can then adapt the sessions to match. At the end of the course, I help the women transition to mainstream fitness courses. The sports centre often refers women to me for guidance and advice on what course to do."
"The word 'power' communicates the idea of both physical strength and the empowerment of women. The domain name powermoms.nl, without a hyphen, wasn't available, so I went for the hyphenated version. A .nl domain name was the obvious choice for me, because it's women here in the Netherlands that I cater for. I also see .nl as a trustworthy domain."
"A few months after starting the business, I sketched out my ideas for the website. I wrote the text myself, and my partner built the site using the Wix platform. I think it's vital that you're visible to your target audience on the internet. A well-designed, visitor-friendly website is central to that. I want pregnant women and new mothers who search for fitness courses online to see my site, and what I'm offering."
"My target audience is active mainly on Instagram, so I often post news and stories there. My Instagram posts let women see what a session is like. I also share tips and advice on staying fit and healthy when you're expecting, or you've got a new baby. My Instagram account is synched with my business's Facebook page, so everything I post automatically appears on Facebook as well."
"I'd like to get more women enrolled, so that I can separate the ZwangerFit and MamaFit courses, instead of running combined sessions. Also, I've recently become a qualified basic personal trainer, and I'd like to start providing personal coaching to pregnant women and new mothers. Looking further ahead, it would be good to extend the range of courses I offer, maybe by organising bootcamps, for example. Ultimately, my goal is to provide both one-to-one and group coaching for women in a variety of fitness activities. Things like running, strength training, cross-fitness training, and so on. So that women can keep fit safely and responsibly during pregnancy and after giving birth."
"It's important to build up a strong contact network. That's definitely worth investing time and energy in. When I set up Power Moms, I got in touch with specialists, such as midwives and pelvic physiotherapists. Collaboration enables you to help each other and to provide more comprehensive expert support to your clients. It's also important to be visible online. So take the time to structure your website in a logical way. And keep it simple, with just the basic information. That way people can immediately see what it is you're offering."
