"By the time people are able to travel again, I want to have all my site content just right, so I can hit the ground running."

For anyone doing business in the Netherlands, .nl is the internet domain. Because the business community has such confidence in .nl, last year we passed the milestone of six million registrations. And behind every registration there's a story. An inspiring story that can help others setting foot on a similar path. One of them is the story of Lisa Kroon and her travel blog Likeapostcard.nl.

You're starting a travel blog when people can't travel?

Lisa: "Exactly! Because people can't travel at the moment, they have more time to read about it. I started travelling with a group of friends when I was fifteen. Since then, we've made another trip together every year, always to a less obvious destination. It's really given me the travel bug, and I now go away several times a year with various people. A while ago, I started to think it would be good to write about my adventures. I had the material, but finding the time to develop the content was another thing. I was working for a travel organisation, but, with all the restrictions, the work has dried up. So I thought, now's the time to start that blog."

You have experience working in the travel industry, then?

"Yes, but the blog is more of a pet project, a personal thing. All the same, I hope it'll generate income in due course. I'm currently doing a number of training courses offered by a provider called De Moderne Nomaden ('The Modern Nomads'). I'm learning about search engines, writing for the web and affiliate marketing. By the time people are able to travel again, I want to have all my site content just right, so I can hit the ground running."

How did you come up with your domain name?

"It's a bit old-school, actually. When I started travelling, I always used to send postcards home, but hardly anyone does that any more. I see my site as a sort of modern alternative. But with a personal touch. I checked on sidn.nl whether the name was free, and it was. So I registered it through Yourhosting as part of a hosting package."

There are plenty of travel blogs out there already. What makes yours different?

"Unfamiliar places, where there's no mass tourism. The sort of places people might not think of, but make great activity holiday destinations. I'm aiming to appeal mainly to younger travellers who enjoy challenging activities, but also winding down with a drink on the beach afterwards. Geographically, I'll be covering all sorts of places in due course, but focusing mainly on Europe for now. There's no shortage of suitable destinations in Europe."

So, where are you going to start?

"With the Hauteroute: a two-week hike from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn. The route follows quite a rough trail, and you camp along the way. I've also got a multi-stage hike in Iceland planned.

Did you build the website yourself?

"Yes, with WordPress and the Elementor Page Builder. Elementor is a great tool for creating a website. Once you've got the hang of it, you can easily build an adaptable website. I had no previous experience of website building, but I didn't find it too difficult at all. It was fun, actually. The site went live last week."

What next?

"I see affiliate marketing as my first income source. I'm planning to work with generic players, such as Booking.com and Bol.com, plus more specialist brands, such as outdoor clothing brands."

The travel industry is having a hard time at the moment. How do you see things going?

"I'm expecting a big rebound. If I get everything set up now, I can ride that wave. By focusing on relatively nearby activity destinations, I think I can appeal to people who are initially cautious about venturing further afield when things start to open up again. I'm not in a hurry. At the moment it's something that I'm doing on the side, for fun as much as anything."
