IRMA powered by SIDN wins MyData Operator 2022 Award

Personal data autonomy set to become the norm

We're proud to announce that IRMA powered by SIDN has won the MyData Operator Award 2022. MyData Global's annual awards recognise businesses and other organisations that have helped to give digital service users more control of their personal data. Receipt of this international award underlines IRMA's commitment to ethical, people-focused principles.

IRMA is straightforward, privacy-friendly and secure

Internet users are constantly being asked to provide privacy-sensitive information, and they often give more detail than really necessary. That needs to change. And it can change. We believe that the development of convenient, privacy-friendly and secure online identification solutions such as IRMA has an important role to play in extending privacy and identity protection and optimising use of the internet. "IRMA is a unique, privacy-friendly ID platform supported by a wide community of public and private-sector players," says SIDN CEO Roelof Meijer. "It's a general-purpose, open-source solution that anyone can use. As such, it can serve as the basis for the development of services that put user security and privacy centre-stage. We are therefore thrilled by this international recognition."

Personal data autonomy set to become the norm

The MyData Operator Awards recognise initiatives that combine the best of two worlds by promoting not only privacy and personal data security, but also user convenience. "We believe that empowering people to make their own choices about their data will soon become the norm for digital services," says Teemu Ropponen, General Manager at MyData Global. "Innovative digital services often make use of personal data. Today, we're celebrating the fact that, all around the world, leading organisations are creating tools that put people first, giving them more insight into and control over their data."

Growing demand for an ethical, people-focused approach to personal data

Thirty-three service providers from fifteen different countries received MyData Operator Awards this year. A total of forty-one businesses and other organisations have now been recognised. Together, they represent examples of best practice to inspire users, governments, investors and other stakeholders. The MyData Operator Award scheme was established in 2020 by the internationally renowned non-profit organisation MyData Global. Its creation reflects the growing demand for a more ethical, people-focused approach to personal data, as embodied by the IRMA platform developed by Stichting Privacy by Design and SIDN.
