IRMA app wins World Summit Award
Global recognition for the privacy-friendly IRMA initiative
Global recognition for the privacy-friendly IRMA initiative
We're pleased to announce that the City of Amsterdam, Informaat and the Privacy by Design Foundation have won a World Summit Award. The three organisations' project "IRMA – A digital wallet for your privacy data on your phone" was crowned in the category 'Government and Citizen Engagement'.
Winning the World Summit Award (WSA) is a wonderful international recognition for the way the City of Amsterdam has used the IRMA app to realise its 'Digital City Agenda' and improve access to its public services, enabling users to keep control of their own data with a digital identity. By adopting a co-creative approach to design, Informaat worked with Amsterdam citizens to develop the UX concept and with the Privacy by Design Foundation to realise the IRMA app. As administrators of the privacy-friendly IRMA identity platform and follow-on developers of the IRMA app, we're very proud of what our IRMA allies have achieved!
WSA is a unique, global platform for the dissemination of local digital innovations that support the UN's objectives by using modern technology to promote social equality, access to information and inclusivity. This year, there were 380 nominations from nearly 182 UN member states, leading to selection of the forty most notable initiatives.
This year's award winners are a prime example of how digital solutions can facilitate full social participation. Using the IRMA app, everyone can obtain a digital identity that enhances their ability to participate by providing access to services. What's more, the app enables users to keep full control over what (personal) data they share, and with whom. It's always completely clear what information a service provider wants, and why.
"As a city, we want to make our services as simple and accessible as possible for everyone and at the same time handle the data of Amsterdammers in a safe and responsible way. With IRMA you only share the most necessary data, data is not stored centrally and the app clearly shows what you share and with whom. IRMA shows that privacy versus convenience does not have to be a field of tension, which is why I am proud of the award that this app has won."
The City of Amsterdam attaches great importance to handling citizens' data responsibly and securely. At the same time, the City wants to make all its services available and readily accessible online. Its aim is to be open and transparent, and to develop services both with and for its residents. Watch the City of Amsterdam's five demos with the IRMA app.
Informaat helps organisations design and realise beneficial digital services on the basis of shared values. Services that are of real value to people's lives and work.
Privacy by Design is a foundation established by the Digital Security Department at Radboud University to roll out the open, privacy-friendly IRMA technology. In pursuit of that goal, the foundation works closely with our own organisation, SIDN. We operate the IRMA infrastructure and work on further development of the IRMA app.
The pilot and the WSA recognition represent an impressive achievement by the IRMA team. The project shows that innovative, privacy-friendly eID solutions aren't a futuristic vision, but deployment-ready proven technology. When the Digital Government Act takes effect in the Netherlands, probably in the summer of 2022, municipalities and other governmental and quasi-governmental bodies will have even greater scope for using IRMA. In the meantime, the IRMA team continues working to enrich the app and its ecosystem with additional functionalities and data sources.
