When did you start at SIDN?

18 September 2023.

What attracted you to SIDN?

Before I joined SIDN, I was with a staff agency, working as an ICT helpdesk officer. I was on the staff agency's books while looking for what I really wanted: a permanent job where I could grow and develop. The interviews I had here went well, and I liked the people I spoke to during the application process.

What was your first week like?

I felt a little bewildered, to be honest. Discovering where everything was, where I should start, what exactly I was supposed to do. Since then, I've found my feet and my place in the team and the department. One thing I really like here is the way people are with each other. I felt welcome right from the start, both within the department and in the wider organisation. People are very open and immediately made me feel comfortable and at home.

What do you think of working in our ICT Department?

It's good. The work I'm doing is still quite new to me. So I'm learning a lot and I have the opportunity to develop professionally. The work is also very varied, which I like. No 2 days are the same.

Do you feel that you know SIDN as an organisation yet?

Not properly. SIDN is a very technical organisation, so it takes a while to understand what's going on in all the various parts of the organisation. Every time I read an internal newsletter or attend a staff meeting, I learn something new about SIDN and the work we do.

What's been difficult for you, and what's come as a pleasant surprise?

I've been amazed how helpful everyone is, always willing to offer support. You get a lot of autonomy from the start, and the scope to make mistakes. One thing that I wouldn't want to describe as difficult in a disagreeable sense, but which I have found challenging, is that a lot of my work is completely new to me. I'm learning all the time, but it's taken me longer to get a clear picture of what the job is all about than maybe I was expecting. The positive side of that is that I've learnt more in the last 3 months than I did in the whole time I was in my last job.

Exploration and discovery are central to SIDN's culture. The organisation attracts people with that kind of mindset. What have you discovered at SIDN?

That it's okay to make mistakes, that you learn by making mistakes.

How do you see your future at SIDN?

I feel very much at home here, that this is where I belong. But I have the ambition to keep learning and developing, with the aim of progressing towards a more senior role within the same field.

What makes SIDN a good place for ICT professionals to work?

The scope that SIDN offers for learning, and how well you're treated. You get an attractive compensation and benefits package, training opportunities, career progression opportunities and a hybrid working set-up.
