In the Dutch parliament, further questions were recently asked about the partial migration of the .nl infrastructure to AWS. The response from the State Secretary for Digitisation and Kingdom Relations, Zsolt Szabó, has now been published. On Thursday 13 March, there was a plenary debate in the lower chamber about the migration of government ICT to other countries. The written statement 'Decision regarding SIDN's migration of the .nl domain registration system to AWS' was also considered during the debate.

Confirmation of earlier agreements

During the debate, the Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Beljaarts, answered questions about the planned partial migration of SIDN's domain registration system to Amazon Web Services (AWS). In his response, Mr Beljaarts repeated that SIDN is an independent foundation, with which arrangements have been made with a view to safeguarding the continuity, security, stability and autonomy of the .nl domain in the context of any future use of the public cloud. The relevant arrangements have previously been formalised in an addendum to the covenant between the Ministry and SIDN. The minister continues to liaise with SIDN regarding the progress of the migration.

Motion

Following the debate, a motion was submitted by the GreenLeft-Labour alliance, supported by the Party for Freedom (PVV) and the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), calling on the government to "begin talks with SIDN and Dutch cloud service providers with a view to enabling the small part of the DNS chain that is due to be transferred to Amazon to return to the Netherlands, and to inform parliament of the outcome before the summer recess."

Vote on 18 March

The lower chamber of parliament will vote on the motion on Tuesday 18 March. If the motion is passed, SIDN will enter into discussions with the ministry and the sector, as we did previously. In the meantime, we will monitor geopolitical developments closely, and will remain in dialogue with the government, our stakeholders and peers about the situation.
