In business, online visibility is increasingly important. Knowing how to build and maintain a website is therefore very useful. But perhaps more important still is understanding how to keep a website secure. The educational sector is placing more and more emphasis on promoting digital resilience amongst young people, the online entrepreneurs of the future. FutureNL is a charitable foundation committed to supporting that movement by promoting digital awareness, skills and resilience amongst children and young adults as part of the civic education curriculum. By making youngsters aware of relevant issues associated with technology, the Foundation aims to help them add to their ethical framework. That goal is pursued by providing free teaching materials for use in primary and secondary education and teacher training. Natasja Corver, Programme Manager at Stichting FutureNL, talks about the new teaching pack 'How to do business online'.

FutureNL launched 'How to do business online' on 19 November, Enterprise Day. The pack was developed in collaboration with Patsboem! Educatief, specifically for students in the final stages of vocational secondary pathways. Natasja explains, "We got the idea for the pack from a discussion with SIDN. From talking to startup businesses and young people, SIDN had observed that they often had a good understanding of the user-facing aspects of websites and other technologies, but knew less about how things worked 'under the hood'. Another problem is that, although young people know about building websites, they tend to have less insight into things like protecting customer data and keeping website visitors safe. That discussion prompted us to develop the concept for the teaching pack."

Build your own online business

The 'How to do business online' teaching pack consists of materials for five lessons, during which pupils build their own online businesses. Each of the lessons has a theme. For example, there's one that focuses on the differences between selling goods and services online and running a physical shop. Other lessons look at the importance of a good domain name and what a secure website looks like. "The lessons can be downloaded for free from the LessonUp platform," continues Natasja. "The package features teaching notes and a ready-to-use presentation to go with each lesson. That's really useful, because it means lesson preparation takes less than fifteen minutes."

Impactful resources

"In order to make an impact with a teaching pack, it's important that schools can easily integrate the material into in the existing curriculum," says Natasja. "Our packs are therefore aligned with the existing learning pathways, in particular the digital literacy and citizenship pathways. So, for example, the 'How to do business online' pack can be used for teaching Economics & Enterprise or Basic ICT Skills. Each lesson plan has accompanying assignments for students and practical examples. We make use of resources such as SIDN videos in which entrepreneurs explain how they thought of their domain names and made sure that their sites were easy to find. That kind of thing brings the lesson themes to life and grounds them in the real world."

Collaboration with SIDN Fund

FutureNL's practical approach was one of the things that persuaded SIDN Fund to support the initiative. Anne Valkering, Project Coordinator at SIDN Fund: "With 'How to do business online', FutureNL is providing a particular group of young people with valuable practical knowledge. Within the target group, there isn't as much recognition of internet-related risks as we would like to see. We feel it's important to build up awareness, because a few years from now many of these young people will be doing business online. They need to know how to minimise risk and keep customer data safe." "SIDN Fund's support enabled us to develop our teaching materials," says Natasja. "The Fund also put us in contact with people who helped us identify the themes that needed to be covered and enrich our lesson content with real-world examples. As a result, students doing the lessons can see how technology can be used constructively to develop a business."

Looking ahead

Natasja: "Since the launch, the 'How to do business online' pack has been used extensively. Before long, we're hoping to start visiting schools to assess the impact. In the meantime, we've started working on another pack devoted to digital citizenship: the interaction between young people and the digital state."
