Willem-Alexander to make a virtual working visit on 16 November
His Majesty the King will pay SIDN a virtual working visit on the morning of Tuesday 16 November to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of SIDN taking over management of the .nl domain. The .nl domain itself has been in existence for thirty-five years. When the first .nl domain name was registered in 1986, the Dutch national domain became the first active country-code domain outside the US. With more than 6.2 million domain names, .nl is today one of the biggest and most secure country-code domains in the world.
SIDN registers .nl domain names and ensures that they are reachable. We also conduct research into new technologies that promote the security and stability of the .nl domain and the internet infrastructure. We work on solutions in the field of cybersecurity and digital identities to make using the internet more convenient and secure, and we support initiatives that promote use of the internet and mitigate its negative side-effects.
The king will talk to SIDN staff about SIDN's history and the .nl domain's development, and hear about the work being done to maintain the security of .nl and assure the continuous availability of the domain. The king will then have a discussion with stakeholders regarding the prevention of internet crime and unlawful activities involving .nl domains, as well as projects that help make the internet stronger and more secure. The virtual working visit will conclude with a talk about possible improvements to the internet and the digital infrastructure of the future, and about strategies for assuring quality, security and privacy as both the internet user population and the intensity of internet use continue to grow.
