ECP's Annual Congress takes place at the Fokker Terminal, The Hague, on Thursday 17 November 2016.
ECP Annual Congress
ECP has set out its vision of the information society in a discussion document entitled The mature information society: The new normal. The document considers the impact of the digitisation on people, society and the economy. There will be further exploration of that theme at this year's ECP Annual Congress. Issues to be examined include privacy, cybersecurity, e-health, digital literacy, internet standards and the ethical and social implications of digitisation. SIDN is once again supporting the congress.
Programme
The programme of the ECP Annual Congress opens and closes with plenary sessions. Between those bookends are twenty-eight subsessions devoted to a wide variety of topics. They include an SIDN subsession on the latest trends in internet use and presentations by SIDN Fund and SIDN Labs.
Trends in internet use: Follow or lead? 11:15 – 12:00, room 8
Het internet blijft in ontwikkeling. Wat betekent dat voor jou? En voor de toekomst van het internet in Nederland? In deze sessie presenteert The internet is constantly changing. What are the implications for you? And for the future of the internet in the Netherlands? In this subsession, Michiel Henneke presents the preliminary findings of SIDN's latest survey of trends in internet use. The results provide an updated picture of various things that SIDN has monitored for some years, such as how much time people spend on their PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones, and what they use the various devices for. In addition, light is shed on a number of topics not previously addressed, including how often people come across insecure sites and how much use they make of virus scanners.
Big data, Big deal! 12:15 – 13:00, room 7
What if smart devices discriminate against us? Can and should such devices be taught about ethics? And are political campaigners in the Netherlands using data collected on line to identify and approach potential supporters? Come and meet SIDN Fund and hear about three inspiring projects in the field of data and ethics: Dubious Devices by Tijmen Schep, Ethics for People and Machines by Nell Watson and Political Profiling in the Netherlands by Balasz Bodo.
The internet: A question of trust 15:00 – 15:45, room 8
As the internet becomes an increasingly integral part of everything that we do, it is vital that we can depend on its quality, security and privacy. SIDN Labs is working with various partners on studies and projects aimed at making the internet infrastructure more stable and secure. During this session, we'll be presenting two interesting projects concerned with privacy and internet fraud: Experience with the privacy management of DNS big data applications, by Jelte Jansen, and Fraudehelpdesk and SIDN join forces to fight internet fraud by Elmer Lastdrager and Maarten Wullink.
NetAidKit, White Spots and Sense Math on the network plaza
ECP's Annual Congress also provides ample opportunity for mixing and networking.
