Symposium on young people, sex and the internet

The theme of Safer Internet Day 2016 is 'Play your part for a better internet'. To tie in with that theme, ECP is organising a symposium on young people, sex and the internet on 9 February. The symposium will explore issues such as sexting, online sex, the way that on-line dating affects young people's self-esteem, and how care providers and coaches working with young people can support internet awareness amongst youngsters (and their parents).

DigiDuck

SIDN sees Safer Internet Day as a very positive initiative. After all, before we let our children go about on their own, we explain the rules of the road. It's just the same with the internet: once children understand about responsible internet use, you can let them browse without worrying about the consequences. So last year we got together with a number of partners to create the DigiDuck as a way of promoting sensible social media use by young people. DigiDuck gives young people the information they need in a playful way. By supporting the initiative, we are contributing to safer internet use amongst young people in the Netherlands.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is an initiative by the European Commission, coordinated by Insafe. Insafe is a network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs) across Europe. There are thirty SICs, one in each of the EU's twenty-seven member states, plus Iceland, Norway and Russia. Each centre typically has an awareness centre, a helpline, a hotline and a youth panel. The Dutch SIC is made up of Veiliginternetten.nl (part of ECP) and the Reporting Hotline for Internet Child Pornography, which will be working to publicise Safer Internet Day in the Netherlands.
