  • I am looking for a domain name registrant. Where can I look it up?

    The Whois is an easy-to-use tool for checking the availability of a .nl domain name. If the domain name is already taken, you can see who has registered it.

    On the page looking up a domain name you will find more information about what a domain name is, how the Whois works and how the privacy of personal data is protected. Alternatively, you can go straight to look for a domain name via the Whois.

  • I would like to transfer my domain name to another registrar. What is the procedure?

    To get your domain name transferred, you need the token (unique ID number) for your domain name. Your existing registrar has the token and is obliged to give it to you within five days, if you ask for it. The procedure for changing your registrar is described on the page transferring your domain name.

  • The details registered about me/my company are incorrect or out of date. How can I get them updated?

    To update the contact details associated with your domain name, you need to contact your registrar. Read more about updating contact details.

  • Why is my domain name in quarantine?

    When a domain name is cancelled, we aren't told the reason, so we can't tell you. You'll need to ask your registrar. The advantage of quarantine is that, if a name's cancelled by mistake, you can always get it back.

    One common reason is that the contract between you and your registrar says you've got to renew the registration every year. If you haven't set up automatic renewal and you don't renew manually, the registration will expire.

  • Ik heb een klacht over mijn provider/registrar. Kan ik daarvoor bij SIDN terecht?

  • What conditions do I have to meet as a registrar?

Exclusively for SIDN BrandGuard users

As a user of SIDN BrandGuard, you can make use of an additional module that enables you to immediately initiate legal action against suspicious domain names flagged up by SIDN BrandGuard. The module gives access to the services of ICTRecht, a law firm specialising in internet abuse and trademark infringement.

SIDN BrandGuard makes it easy to track down malicious domain registrations. However, taking action against the parties behind those registrations often calls for highly specialised knowledge that not many legal teams possess. What's more, domain name disputes often involve commercial considerations. Should you try to get an offending domain name disabled? Or merely fire a warning shot across the owner's bow? It helps to discuss the options with an experienced professional who has insight into the pros and cons.

What can you do with the Legal Follow-up module?

  • Quick scan within one working day The module lets you ask for advice, so you can decide how to proceed. You can get answers to questions such as: Can we take legal action against this domain name? What are our options? What are the prospects of success? The quick scan is completed within one working day and provides a preliminary assessment with very little impact on your own legal team.

  • Get proceedings started by experts You can also get legal proceedings started immediately by experts. You might initiate an extrajudicial 'cease and desist' procedure, for example, where an expert draws up an injunction notice. Alternatively, if a domain name or website needs to be taken down urgently (e.g. to stop a phishing scam), your expert adviser might initiate a notice-and-take-down procedure.

  • Keep colleagues informed From the SIDN BrandGuard Legal Follow-up module, it's easy to record the action taken and share progress updates with your colleagues.

Two variants

The service includes an intake consultation with experts from ICTRecht, plus periodic progress discussions regarding open cases. Another option is a short (online) instruction meeting to discuss the legal follow-up. Legal follow-up is a supplementary service, available exclusively to SIDN BrandGuard users. There are two variants:

  1. A basic module for quick scans, advice and incidental support

  2. A premium module that includes a budget for proceedings and notice-and-take-down action

The best variant for your organisation depends on your in-house expertise and capacity, your incident frequency and other organisation-specific factors. We're happy to help you make a choice.
