What are internet standards?

The internet is a global network of web servers and other systems. For all those systems to communicate with each other effectively, we need international agreements about things such as how data will be exchanged. Those agreements are called internet standards or protocols. Modern and secure internet standards make the internet more trustworthy and enable continued growth. We therefore promote their use. This page provides information about how we do that, plus advice on how to implement the standards yourself.

The internet standards we promote

Implementing modern standards

We can help you implement modern standards on your own technical infrastructure. Check out our hands-on guides to using DNSSEC and e-mail security standards in combination with popular name server and mail server software.

Every organisation can benefit from using modern internet standards

The importance of making the internet more secure is underscored by news stories on a daily basis. And the limited nature of the IPv4 address space has been causing problems for decades. But where do you begin? After all, infrastructure providers and operators have limited budgets and capacity. To provide an overview of the interrelationships and relative priorities, we have developed a maturity model of the key internet standards. Do you plan to stay old school, or make your organisation future-proof? Read more about the maturity model.

We promote the use of internet standards

Modern internet standards make the internet more trustworthy and enable continued growth. We therefore promote their use in a variety of ways.

  • We incentivise .nl registrars to adopt the standards for the benefit of end users.

  • We share our knowledge of modern internet standards with registrars through the SIDN Academy, webinars and SIDN TechTalks.

  • We publish practical guides to help organisations get to grips with implementation of the standards.
